After obtaining the relevant licence, a specialist can practise medicine independently in their field of expertise.

In Slovenia, medical specialisations are run by the Medical Chamber of Slovenia (Zdravniška zbornica Slovenije), while their types, content, duration and course are set by regulations. The Medical Chamber publishes the current specialisation programmes, their content, duration and other information for trainees on its website.

Specialist doctor – a short description of the profession

A specialist doctor diagnoses, treats and follows up patients in their field. Slovenia currently has 49 medical specialisations, including family medicine, paediatrics, internal medicine, surgery, radiology, psychiatry, emergency medicine, oncology and many others. Independent specialist practice requires the relevant licence.

What does a specialist doctor do?

A specialist’s work depends on their specialisation. A specialist may:

carry out specialist examinations,

make diagnoses,

plan treatment,

carry out medical procedures,

prescribe medicines within their competence,

monitor the course of illness,

take part in emergency care,

perform operations, if they are a surgical specialist,

take part in multidisciplinary care,

take part in prevention,

take part in research and teaching,

lead or work in a healthcare team,

prepare professional documentation,

help introduce new diagnostic and therapeutic methods.

The scope of competence depends on the specialisation, the licence, the post and the specific field of work.

How do you become a specialist doctor?

The path to becoming a specialist is long and has several stages. In general:

secondary school → medical school → traineeship or prescribed training → professional examination → conditions for independent practice → specialisation → specialist examination → licence for the specialist field

Specialisation is structured postgraduate professional training in which the doctor works under supervision or mentorship and gradually gains the competences for independent specialist work.

→ Medical doctor: medical school, traineeship, professional exam and licence

Is the specialist doctor a regulated profession?

Yes. Medical practice is a regulated activity. To practise independently, a doctor must meet the conditions set by law and hold the relevant licence.

A specialist doctor may practise independently in the field for which they are professionally qualified and hold the relevant licence.

What is specialisation?

Specialisation is organised professional education and practical training for a doctor in a particular field of medicine. During specialisation, the trainee:

works in various healthcare institutions,

completes the prescribed rotations,

gains practical experience,

carries out diagnostic and therapeutic procedures,

takes part in patient care,

acquires specialist competences,

takes knowledge assessments,

prepares a specialist thesis or meets other final requirements of the programme.

The length of specialisation depends on the field.

How long does specialisation take?

Specialisations are not all the same length. Some programmes take about two years, others four, five, six or more. The Medical Chamber’s current list, for example, gives clinical pharmacology and clinical nutrition a duration of two years, many internal medicine and diagnostic specialisations take four to five years, and some surgical specialisations take six or seven years.

The duration may change with a new programme, so always check the current programme for a given specialisation.

All medical specialisations in Slovenia

Below are the current medical specialisations in Slovenia. Particularly strong examples include:

family medicine,

paediatrics,

internal medicine,

psychiatry,

gynaecology and obstetrics,

emergency medicine,

dermatovenereology,

neurology,

cardiology,

gastroenterology,

orthopaedics,

oncology.

The amount of direct contact depends on the post and the organisation of work.

Which specialisations involve more laboratory work?

A larger share of laboratory and diagnostic work is found mainly in:

clinical microbiology,

clinical genetics,

pathology,

transfusion medicine,

clinical pharmacology.

Doctors in other fields may also do an important part of their work in a laboratory or diagnostic setting.

Can a doctor change specialisation?

The options depend on the applicable rules, the call, the trainee’s status, the programme and the specific circumstances. In its calls and procedures, the Medical Chamber applies rules on specialisations, candidates and the relatedness of individual specialisations.

Changing specialisation is therefore not something that can be done automatically in every programme.

How is a specialisation post obtained?

In Slovenia, medical specialisations are advertised under the Medical Services Act and the rules governing the types, content, duration and course of specialisations. The Medical Chamber publishes public calls for specialisations:

for individual healthcare providers,

for the whole country,

for individual specialist fields with a known funder.

The call sets out the number of available posts.

Who pays for specialisation?

The funder depends on the type of call and the specific post. In calls, the funder may be:

a public healthcare institution,

another healthcare provider,

another legal or natural person,

another funder specified in the call.

In calls with a known funder, the candidate may find a funder themselves, if the call allows it.

How much does a specialist trainee earn?

A specialist trainee is an employed doctor and is paid under the applicable pay system or their contract with the employer. Pay depends on:

the post,

the pay grade,

length of service,

allowances,

on-call duty,

night work,

work on Sundays and public holidays,

other elements of pay.

It is therefore not possible to give a single salary for all specialist trainees.

Specialist doctors in hospitals

A large share of specialists work in hospitals. The work may include:

outpatient work,

ward work,

operations,

diagnostics,

consultations,

on-call duty,

intensive care,

taking part in multidisciplinary case conferences,

following up hospitalised patients.

The organisation of work depends on the specialisation.

Specialist doctors in community health centres

Specialists can also work in community health centres. Examples include:

family medicine,

paediatrics,

gynaecology,

psychiatry,

physical and rehabilitation medicine,

occupational, traffic and sports medicine,

emergency medicine and other fields.

Specialist doctors in private practice

Specialists can also work for private healthcare providers. They must meet the conditions for practising medicine and hold the relevant licence.

→ All vacancies for doctors

The specialist doctor’s licence

A licence is a public document proving a doctor’s professional competence to practise medicine independently in a specific field.

A doctor who passes the specialist examination in Slovenia and meets the conditions is granted the licence ex officio. The licence is granted for a fixed period, currently seven years. After that it must be renewed in line with the continuing professional development requirements and the applicable rules.

Specialist doctors and continuing professional development

Medical knowledge changes quickly. A specialist therefore needs to keep up with:

new diagnostic methods,

new medicines,

new surgical techniques,

clinical guidelines,

scientific research,

changes in legislation,

safety procedures.

Continuing professional development is also important for renewing the licence.

Specialist doctors and artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence is increasingly used in medicine. It can be used for:

analysing medical images,

supporting diagnosis,

analysing data,

clinical decision support,

research,

administrative tasks.

However, artificial intelligence does not replace the doctor’s professional responsibility. A specialist must be able to assess the results of technology professionally and integrate them into the overall care of the patient.

What qualities does a specialist doctor need?

Important qualities are:

professionalism,

responsibility,

accuracy,

decision-making,

analytical thinking,

communication skills,

empathy,

teamwork,

psychological resilience,

commitment to lifelong learning,

the ability to work under time pressure.

Different specialisations call for different combinations of these qualities.

Is a specialist doctor’s work demanding?

Yes. A specialist doctor bears professional responsibility for their decisions. The work may involve:

difficult diagnoses,

complex treatment,

emergencies,

difficult conversations with patients and families,

on-call duty,

night work,

a lot of administration,

continuous education.

How demanding it is varies greatly between specialisations.

Advantages of the profession

a high level of professional expertise,

the opportunity to work in a specialised field,

work in a field that interests the doctor professionally,

opportunities to work in various healthcare institutions,

opportunities for research and teaching,

opportunities for professional development,

taking part in the development of medicine.

Challenges of the profession

a long path of education,

a demanding specialisation,

responsibility for medical decisions,

on-call duty,

night and shift work in some fields,

emotionally demanding situations,

continuing professional development,

administrative burden.

The future of specialist doctors

Specialist doctors will remain essential to the functioning of the healthcare system.

Demographic change, new therapies, population ageing, advances in diagnostics, personalised medicine and digitalisation are changing the way specialists work.

The future of medicine will increasingly rely on connecting different specialist fields, data support, new technologies and multidisciplinary cooperation.

Frequently asked questions

What is a specialist doctor?

A specialist doctor is a doctor who has completed a specialisation in a particular field of medicine, passed the specialist examination and meets the conditions for independent specialist practice.

How many medical specialisations are there in Slovenia?

According to the current list of the Medical Chamber of Slovenia, there are 49 current medical specialisations in Slovenia. Current programmes should be distinguished from archived programmes and from specialisations for doctors of dental medicine.

Which is the longest specialisation?

It depends on the programme. Some current programmes take six or seven years.

Are all specialisations the same length?

No. The length varies between specialisations.

Who advertises specialisation posts?

Medical specialisations are run by the Medical Chamber of Slovenia, which publishes public calls in line with the applicable regulations.

Can a doctor choose their specialisation?

A doctor applies for advertised specialisation posts. The choice therefore depends on the available calls, the conditions, the results achieved and other rules of the procedure.

Does a specialist doctor need a licence?

Yes. To practise medicine independently, they must hold the relevant licence.

Can a doctor work without a specialisation?

A doctor without a specialisation cannot automatically be equated with a specialist doctor. The conditions for independent medical practice are set by regulations and relate to education, the professional examination, registration and the licence.

Can a specialist doctor work in a private clinic?

Yes, if they meet the conditions for practising medicine and hold the relevant licence.

Which specialisation involves working with children?

The main ones are paediatrics, paediatric surgery, paediatric neurology, child and adolescent psychiatry and neonatology.

Which specialisations involve operations?

Surgical specialisations include abdominal, cardiovascular, maxillofacial, neurosurgery, paediatric surgery, orthopaedic, plastic, general and thoracic surgery, traumatology, urology and vascular surgery.

Which specialisations are linked to diagnostics?

Practically all specialisations involve diagnostics. Radiology, pathology, clinical microbiology, clinical genetics and nuclear medicine are especially diagnostic.

Can a doctor continue their education after specialisation?

Yes. A specialist can continue professional development, gain new knowledge and take part in research, teaching or professional work.

SPECIALIST DOCTOR JOBS (see current vacancies for specialist doctors)

ARE YOU HIRING A SPECIALIST DOCTOR? (see the packages for posting a job advert)

What is a BOOST advert?
