There is no universal answer, but there are recurring differences worth knowing before you decide.

Below they are, without sugar-coating and without promises.

The rhythm of work

In public institutions the work is often more predictable in structure and less predictable in load — rosters are systemic, but volume swings with demand.

In private institutions it is more often the reverse: volume is better planned because appointments are booked, but there is less slack when someone is missing.

Ask concretely: who makes the roster, how far ahead you know it and what happens during sick leave.

The breadth of work

In larger public institutions you will see more varied cases, including more demanding and rarer ones. That matters for professional development, especially in the early years.

In private institutions the work is more often narrower and more repetitive. That is not bad — many people prefer it for the calm and routine — but it is worth knowing what you gain and what you do not.

Team and support

This is the difference people underestimate most. In a large institution you have more colleagues to turn to and more formal routes when something goes wrong.

In a small team you are closer to decisions and heard more quickly, but there are fewer people who can cover for you or support you in a demanding case.

Advancement and training

In the public sector, paths for advancement are more formalised and slower, but also more predictable. Specialisations and training have their own system.

In the private sector arrangements are more individual. That can mean a faster agreement, but also that training is not a given. Ask whether it is paid and whether it falls within working hours — this often matters more than the salary figure itself.

Pay

We will not quote figures here, because they differ by profession, level and institution. It is more important to know what counts towards pay: shift allowances, on-call duty, length of service, standby and training.

Two offers with the same base salary can look very different after a year. Compare the whole package, not the base.

Job security

Public institutions are considered more stable, which holds in terms of formal security. Private institutions depend more on demand and business decisions.

On the other hand, demand for healthcare staff is so high that the risk of unemployment is low in both cases for most professions.

How to decide

Instead of a general “which is better”, answer this:

What do I want to be able to do in five years, and where will I learn it faster?

How much predictability do I need because of family or commuting?

Do I prefer a large structure or a small team?

What matters more to me: breadth of cases or a calmer rhythm?

One more thing

The move is not one-way. In healthcare people regularly return from private to public and back — experience from one side is almost always valued on the other.

What younger generations expect from employers is covered in What the new generation of healthcare workers wants.
